Excellence Awards Celebrate our Communities!

The Smart Growth Partnership seeks to review and recognize projects and policies that use smart growth principles to improve communities environmentally, socially, and economically.

Communities all over the United States are using smart growth principles to protect and enhance the natural environment while strengthening their economies. They are reusing previously developed land; providing more housing and transportation choices; preserving critical natural areas; and developing vibrant places to live, work, shop, and play. When properly implemented, these techniques can protect air, water, and land resources and make communities more attractive to businesses, residents, and visitors.

The SGP recognizes communities and projects that have successfully used these to preserve and enhance their quality of life while protecting public health and the environment.  We endeavor to recognize projects, policies and communities that have used approaches that involve a broad variety of stakeholders and are innovative, yet could be replicated elsewhere. Awarded projects will be recognized at the Smart Growth Partnership’s Annual Event, through press releases and at agency council or commission meetings (e.g. CRA Board, City Commission, etc.).  Additional appropriate venues for recognition may be requested by recipients.

In order to nominate a project, policy or plan that has been completed, implemented or is substantially under development, please download and complete the attached application. Demonstrate (in 500 words or less) how the applicant has significantly incorporated our smart growth principles into its vision, process or design. Attach supporting documentation.  Also indicate if you are a member of the Smart Growth Partnership or if you would like to learn more about becoming a member.  Please send your application before the deadline to NLocke@res.us and smartgrowthpartnership@gmail.com.

  • The Pompano Beach Youth Sports Complex Park entailed redevelopment of a parcel formerly owned and operated as the “Elks Club” into a Youth Sports Facility. The City’s first goal was to preserve green space for public use and create a brand-new park for its children. The park creates linear connectivity to the Sample McDougal House, a historically significant and registered house that’s over 100 years old.

    Promote Economic Development

Attract businesses and jobs to locations near housing, infrastructure, and transportation options. Promote economic development in industry clusters. Expand access to education, training, and entrepreneurial opportunities. Support the growth of local businesses, including sustainable natural resource-based businesses, such as agriculture, forestry, clean energy technology, and fisheries.

    Create Livable Communities

Support the revitalization of city and town centers and neighborhoods by promoting development that is compact, conserves land, protects historic resources, and integrates uses. Encourage remediation and reuse of existing sites, structures, and infrastructure rather than new construction in undeveloped areas. Create pedestrian-friendly districts and neighborhoods that mix commercial, civic, cultural, educational, and recreational activities with open spaces and homes.

    Promote Alternative Transportation

Maintain and expand transportation options that maximize mobility, reduce congestion, conserve fuel, and improve air quality. Prioritize rail, bus, boat, rapid and surface transit, shared-vehicle and shared-ride services, bicycling, and walking. Invest strategically in existing and new passenger and freight transportation infrastructure that supports sound economic development consistent with Smart Growth objectives.

Create a Range of Housing Opportunities

Support the construction and rehabilitation of homes to meet the needs of people of all abilities, income levels, and household types. Build homes near jobs, transit, and where services are available. Foster the development of housing, particularly multifamily and smaller single-family homes, in a way that is compatible with a community's character and vision and with providing new housing choices for people of all means.

Preserve Open Space, Natural Resources & Environment

Protect and restore environmentally sensitive lands, natural resources, agricultural lands, critical habitats, wetlands and water resources, and cultural and historic landscapes. Increase the quantity, quality, and accessibility of open spaces and recreational opportunities.
